THE UNEXPECTED is a band of veteran musicians who have come together to produce a sound that draws from elements of jazz, rock and Brazilian music as well as the blues. Catchy beats and hooks draw listeners in to take a deeper dive into the lyrics, which range from upbeat to more thoughtful and reflective themes. The band strives to offer a sense of surprise through the music they create and cover. David Weidenfeld
… is a singer/songwriter and guitarist with extensive experience in a variety of musical contexts who has performed with numerous bands and as a solo artist in the Valley and in New York City. In New York, he developed his skills as a member of the Songwriters Guild of America and performed in clubs including CBGB’s, Fast Folk and the Sidewalk Cafe. Upon returning to the Valley in 2000, he recorded a CD of Brazilian- and jazz-infused original songs which he performed with a six-piece band. He has continued to compose new pieces for The Unexpected that showcase his eclectic influences.
Dave Porter
… grew up in the Valley and studied cello as a youth before switching to bass in high school. In college in Philadelphia, he played in a 15-piece jazz big band, revues, musicals (Hair, Company) and in several rock bands, and continued to play clubs in and around the city with original rock and jazz bands for the next 15 years. He returned to the Valley in 2022 and joined forces with former classmate David Weidenfeld to form The Unexpected.

… has been playing drums since he was in utero, locking into the rhythm of life from Main Street in Northampton to the beat of the subway in Brooklyn. After years of playing clubs and venues across New York City, he explored another side of the music scene, managing and booking shows for a bar in New Paltz, N.Y. Whether behind the kit or behind the scenes, Rafael has always been drawn to bringing people together through live music.
